This memoir about the ongoing trauma a sexual violence survivor faces after reporting a crime has deservedly received a lot of attention. This attention is partly because of the fame of the case, Chanel Miller was previously known as Emily Doe, the woman who published her impact statement after her attacker received a hideously light sentence for his sexual assaults on Miller. Miller’s impact statement was immensely powerful, and that power carries over into Know My Name, where she details the ways she was re-traumatised by the courts process, judicial decision, and media coverage. Miller is a brilliant writer – both her impact statement and this memoir are books that should always be read and remembered. It is part of a growing archive of literature and art about the pervasive pain and trauma of rape.
